Thor's hammer was a popular thing to laugh about on the set of Marvel Studios' Avengers movie, according to Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner

Jeremy Renner and the Avengers cast thought the MCU was goofy and ridiculous, until they realized how special the films were

Mjolnir can summon thunder.

Mjolnir can battle giants.

Mjolnir is the weapon of Thor, the God of Thunder.

Mjolnir is…. foam. At least that’s what Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner says.

According to the actor, the early Marvel movies, including 2012’s The Avengers, used a foam hammer for Thor’s Mjolnir, which the cast made fun.

“It’s easy to talk about in reflection. During the first of that, we had no idea what was going on,” Renner says during a panel at Florida Supercon. “We thought we were at a Halloween party. We’re all laughing at each other’s costumes and Thor’s foam hammer, and all that was ridiculous. But, at the end of it all, the takeaways are the great friendships and bonds.”

Looking past the costumes and props, Renner and his Marvel castmates realized the deeper mythology behind the stories they were telling, and the deep way audiences connected with it.

“To go through such a global experience, 22 films to make the 23rd, Endgame. And we got to experience a lot of stuff together. My friendships with them are quite important to me, and that’s kind of the greatest takeaway. Everyone is a part of that all around the world. That’s pretty special to go to the cinema and see those movies. I would go sneak in the back just to kind of be with people, because it’s such a wonderful experience to watch people watch a movie that you’ve done. It’s pretty amazing.”
