Avengers actress Elizabeth Olsen thought she was auditioning for Gamora when she met with Marvel for Wanda Maximoff

How do you become an Avenger? Sometimes it happens without you realizing it. For example, when Elizabeth Olsen auditioned for Wanda Maximoff, she thought she was trying out for another Marvel character on another team.
“I met with Marvel generally and then Joss [Whedon],” Elizabeth Olsen says during a spotlight panel at C2E2 2026. As Olsen explains, her brother helped her prepare for the audition, and he told her she was auditioning for Gamora. “He was saying Guardians characters. I wasn’t prepped for Scarlet Witch. He was saying Guardians characters, I’m pretty sure.”
The first Guardians of the Galaxy film was in development around the time Olsen auditioned for Scarlet Witch, so this makes sense. However, it soon became clear that her character was the Scarlet Witch, and her onscreen brother would be played by Aaron-Taylor Johnson, who incidentally played Olsen’s onscreen husband in the 2014 Godzilla film.
“I think he and I were talking about it during reshoots of Godzilla that we had to do, and it was more of a conversation of, are you really doing it? And we were both really excited and I think equally intimidated because the Avengers for the first film had already come out and was such a huge success.”
And that’s how Elizabeth Olsen became an Avenger. Still, it’s interesting to wonder how she would’ve fared as a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
