Pixar's Wall-E and a Star Wars droid: What Marvel Studios wanted the Fantastic Four: First Steps robot H.E.R.B.I.E. to sound like

H.E.R.B.I.E. seemed like a cross between Wall-E and a Star Wars droid, and it turns out that was by design

One of the most loveable parts of Fantastic Four: First Steps was H.E.R.B.I.E., the team’s robot who warmed his way into our hearts. It turns out one of the reasons H.E.R.B.I.E. is so loveable is because in a way he was created using ingredients from two other popular robots. Sound editor and voice actor Matthew Wood, who provided the voice of H.E.R.B.I.E., says that Marvel had one request when they cast him in the role.

“I just did the Fantastic Four movie. I just played the droid H.E.R.B.I.E.,” Wood says during a panel at Dragon Con. “Kevin Feige and Matt Shakman, the director, said we want something that’s somewhere between Wall-E, which I worked on, and Star Wars, which I worked on. So, I had to find the Venn diagram of where that is, and where that sweet spot is. I gave them all the options, and they liked it.”

That tracks, because H.E.R.B.I.E. definitely seems like the lovechild of Wall-E and R2-D2.

Hmmm….come to think of it, Disney owns all three of these robots. If they’re looking for a box office blockbuster, I’m sure millions of moviegoers would love to see these three machines together on the big screen.
