Marvel Studios' tragic opening scene for Avengers: Endgame was originally written for Avengers: Infinity War

Hawkeye’s family was originally supposed to be dusted in Infinity War, but the scene was moved to the opening of Avengers: Endgame

The end of Avengers: Infinity War is emotionally devastating. After Thanos uses the Infinity Gauntlet, the audience sits through minutes of their favorite characters turning into dust and fading away. It’s not for the faint of heart, but the original plans for the ending were even rougher. As it turns out, that wasn't the full intended ending.

According to MCU stalwart Jeremy Renner, if Marvel Studios had gone with their original outline, Avengers: Infinity War would’ve ended with Hawkeye’s wife and children turning to dust along with Thanos’s other victims. Instead, that scene was moved to the opening of Endgame.

“That scene was supposed to be at the end of Infinity War,” Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner says during a panel at Space Con 2025. However, Marvel Studios felt it fit better thematically in Avengers: Endgame, helping to bookend the theme of loss. This also helped build Clint Barton’s arc as Ronin.

“It was supposed to be at the end of Infinity War, and then it goes into Ronin land. But then it didn’t work. So, let’s just bookend this whole thing. A lot of things happen in Endgame, guys. A lot of things. So, Ronin comes into play because of what happens to his family, and the blip and all that stuff.”

It’s amazing to think about how different both movies would have hit if the scene had been switched, but I think Marvel made the right call.
