How Mortal Kombat II's Johnny Cage would handle a comic convention like NYCC, according to Johnny Cage actor Karl Urban

From down-and-out to Earth Realm champion: Karl Urban on Johnny Cage’s Mortal Kombat II journey.

When the cast and crew of the upcoming video game adaptation Mortal Kombat II arrived at New York Comic Con 2025, their first stop was a visit with Popverse’s Ashley V. Robinson in The Studio. Cast members Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Tati Gabrielle, and Martyn Ford, writer Jeremy Slater, director Simon McQuoid, and Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon all sat down with Robinson for an in-depth conversation about the highly anticipated film. One of the details shared was Urban’s take on how his character, Johnny Cage, would handle a comic convention.

The topic came up when Robinson observed, “Karl, you are very much a veteran of comic con. You are the king of all genre fiction at this point onscreen. Fantasy, sci-fi, superheroes, video games. Literally, you’ve it all.” Turning to Urban’s  character in Mortal Kombat II, Robinson asked, “What do you think he would be up to if he were attending New York Comic Con this weekend?”

“It’s funny, actually,” Urban answered. “In the film, we shot a sequence where Johnny Cage is attending a comic con and nobody is in his line, and nobody knows who Johnny Cage is. So at the point that we find Johnny Cage in our story, the world has forgotten him, and he’s a down-and-out former martial arts action movie star. And that’s really the starting point for Johnny Cage in this movie. Which is a fun place to start him, and through the course of the film, we get to see him transform into a champion of Earth Realm, as he’s involuntarily drawn into the world of Mortal Kombat.”
