Avengers: Secret Wars will be a "reset" of the MCU, setting up a new, X-Men era (with a new cast)

Don't call it a reboot, but things are going to change in the MCU going foward.

With 37 films in the MCU, there is a definite sense that it is straining under the weight of everything that has come before – and that isn’t including all the new TV shows that have landed on Disney+. It is becoming an almost incomprehensible collection of stories. That is why the news that 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars would serve as a “reset” to the MCU feels like the right decision by Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios.

Currently, Avengers: Doomsday is currently filming, but Marvel Studios is already looking toward its follow-up, Secret Wars, as setting up the future of the MCU. “Reboot is a scary word,” Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige said during an interview to promote The Fantastic Four: First Steps. “Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline – we’re thinking along those lines.”

One of the big changes Marvel Studios is going to make following Avengers: Secret Wars is to recast many of the X-Men who are appearing in Avengers: Doomsday. That means we’ll be getting new actors in the roles of Professor X, Magneto, and Cyclops, and potentially a new Wolverine (once Deadpool is done with him). Kevin Feige makes it clear in the interview that Avengers: Secret Wars is all about setting the MCU up for success in the coming years. “’Endgame,’ literally, was about endings. ‘Secret Wars’ is about beginnings.”

Of course, Marvel Studios needs to get through Avengers: Doomsday first, which has one of the largest casts of any comic book movie out there, before they can reset the timeline in Secret Wars in 2027.
