Andrew Garfield would play Spider-Man again - but not in the MCU way you might be thinking

No, this isn't news of The Amazing Spider-Man 3, sad to say. But there is a certain third web-slinging adventure that Garfield can see himself dusting off the mask for

Would Andrew Garfield return as Spider-Man? It's a question that has been part of online comic book movie discourse ever since the actor appeared in the multiversal Spider-Man: No Way Home. And while fans have speculated on everything from more adventures of Garfield's "Peter 3" alongside the MCU's Tom Holland to an actual Amazing Spider-Man 3 (good luck with that one, kids), Garfield has pretty much maintained that he's not returning to the live-action MCU.

But would he return to the Spider-Man role in a different way? Well, that answer isn't quite so set in stone.

The question came up during an interview between Garfield and MTV's Josh Horowitz, during which the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast host seemed intent on getting Garfield to confirm his involvement in the next stages of the MCU. And while he didn't get that, he did get the After the Hunt actor to reveal what would et him back in the Spider-Suit.

Er, in the sound booth, pretending to be in the Spider-Suit.

"I really love the Spider-Verse movies," Garfield said when asked about any Marvel projects he'd be excited to be a part of. "I love [Phil] Lord and [Christopher] Miller. Just putting that out there."

Of course, regular Popverse readers probably know that Garfield is hinting at not another live-action Spidey adventure at all, but Sony's animated Spider-Verse films, which have the blockbuster team of Lord and Miller at the helm. Now, we're not going to argue about whether or not this means he'd be part of the multiverse the MCU covers, firstly because we don't have time and you will get mad at us, but secondly because this is, in no way, a confirmation that Garfield is involved in the next entry to that saga - Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

That said, Garfield's admission does come at a particularly interesting time for the third film in the Spider-Verse trilogy, one in which we assume it's still possible to add in a cameo or two from previous Spider-Folks. Might one of those voices behind the animated masks sound quite familiar to fans of one of cinema's three live-action Peter Parkers? At this point, even our Spidey senses couldn't answer that one.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is slated for release June 18, 2027.

Marvel's most reliable superhero has proven he can do a whole lot more than just 'whatever a spider can.' Swing into Spidey's history with Popverse's...

Just watch out for that radioactive blood.

Grant DeArmitt

Grant DeArmitt: Grant DeArmitt (he/him) likes horror, comics, and the unholy union of the two. In the past, and despite their better judgment, he has written for Nightmare on Film Street and Newsarama. He lives in Brooklyn with his partner, Kingsley, and corgi, Legs.
