Tom Holland and Jake Gyllenhaal didn't know about the biggest Spider-Man: Far From Home twist until just before release

There are some subtle hints along the way, but even Samuel L. Jackson's MCU co-stars didn't know about Nick Fury's biggest secret in Spider-Man: Far From Home

Fans of the Spider-Man comics went into Spider-Man: Far From Home knowing one of the movie’s big twists. Mysterio is an iconic villain of the wall-crawler, so it wasn’t likely that Marvel Studios would give him a purely heroic role in the MCU. However, the other big twist of the movie involving Nick Fury was definitely a surprise – even to stars Tom Holland and Jake Gyllenhaal.

While speaking at a panel at Ace Universe, Tom Holland and Jake Gyllenhaal recalled that they didn’t actually know that Nick Fury wasn’t actually in the movie and that he had been replaced by a Skrull at the time. “I’m trying to think if I did know that,” Holland mused before admitting, “No, I probably didn’t.”

“There were pieces of it that we kind of knew,” Gyllenhaal added. “I didn’t really really know until about a month before the movie was released.”

“Yeah, because there was those reshoots, wasn’t there?” Holland said. “And I wasn’t invited there because I got it right the first time. That’s not true. I think, you know, I don’t think I did know about that. You’re talking about the scene with the Skrulls, yeah? No, I don’t think I did. Well, I do love that scene.”

When you think about it, it makes sense that neither star would know about the Nike Fury twist at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home. After all, Spider-Man and Mysterio only interact with Nick Fury when he is played by Samuel L. Jackson, so they probably wouldn’t have needed to know anything that happened later in the film. And, of course, the less you tell Tom Holland, the less he’s able to accidentally leak to the press.
