Get Out and Black Panther star Daniel Kaluuya becomes the second Spider-Verse star to get a spinoff, as Sony greenlights Spider-Punk
Like Nicolas Cage's Spider-Noir, Kaluuya will be take the character he brought to life in Sony's Spider-Verse into another story - but unlike the Prime Video series, Spider-Punk will stay animated

The Spider-Verse is growing.
After becoming one of the breakout characters from 2023's Across the Spider-Verse, Spider-Punk is getting his own movie. Sony has greenlit the project and, appropriately, brought in the man who gave Spider-Punk (AKA Hobie Brown) life in the animated sequel to Into the Spider-Verse, Daniel Kaluuya. Along with Primetime's Ajon Singh, Kaluuya will write the film's story, though it has not been confirmed whether the Get Out actor will return to voice the role as well.
(But let's be honest, it would be super weird if he didn't, right?)
This story comes from the good folks at Deadline, in an article published August 5. The Deadline reporting also brings up the fact that, though Kaluuya's beloved anarchist and punk rocker will be at the forefront of the first animated spinoff of Sony's massively popular Spider-Verse films, his story won't technically be the first. That would be Nicolas Cage's Spider-Noir, which is set to debut on Prime Video some time in 2026. Cage, like Kaluuya, will reprise his role as an alternate universe Spider-Man that has teamed up with Miles Morales to defend the Spider-Verse.
Exciting as this news is, it's extremely likely that we won't be seeing Kaluuya leading a solo Spider-Punk film for a very long time. Popverse readers are already very familiar with the many delays to which the third film in the Miles Morales Spider-Man trilogy - that is, Beyond the Spider-Verse - has been subject. Originally slated for release in March of 2024 (!), Beyond is now officially looking at a June 4, 2027 release date. So while we stand by the fact that the Spider-Verse is growing (and our excitement that Hobie Brown is part of what it's growing toward), we temper that with the reality that this franchise is taking its time with that growth.
Then again, James Gunn's Superman has proven audiences are hungry for punk rock superhero stories these days, so perhaps that'll help Sony get the proverbial spiked ball rolling a little faster.
