Miles Morales' superpower is his family - and they're at the heart of the third Spider-Verse movie
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse directors Christopher Miller and Phil Lord dished on what fans can expect from next year's conclusion to the Spider-Verse trilogy

Miles Morales may be Spider-Man, but he's got a distinct superpower from Peter Parker: his parents are alive. Okay, I meant that facetiously (Miles has the power of invisibility that Peter lacks, by the way), but in my defense, Spider-Verse directors Christopher Miller and Phil Lord do see that Miles Morales's family is a "superpower" in its own right.
While on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the co-directors dished on what will make the upcoming Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse film distinct from the previous two films. "This is the most emotional of the three movies, for sure," said Christopher Miller. "And Miles's superpower is that family, and that's the franchise's superpower. They are indestructible in front of the audience. And so we wanted to make the final movie of these three about that," said Phil Lord.
At CinemaCon 2026, Sony Pictures unveiled the first images from the film, which has been highly anticipated, given the cliffhanger ending of 2023's Across the Spider-Verse. The film is expected to hit theaters on June 18, 2027, so we're in the home stretch here, people.
Given the co-directors' statements, plus one of the images revealed at CinemaCon being a frame of Spider-Punk with the text "gonna save your dad," some Spider-Verse fans online are worried that Miles' father, Jefferson, is going to die in the film. After all, Spider-Man is a role that's been marked by tragedy and loss. That said, I can count myself as among the cohort hoping to see Jefferson make it out okay (and Miles's mother, Rio, as well).
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will be in theaters June 18, 2027.
