Now that you’ve seen Spider-Man: Brand New Day, chances are you have thoughts on who the real villain in the film is. Regardless of whether you think the villain is Jean Grey or the Damage Control boss, Bill Metzger, actor Tramell Tillman has thoughts on why his character, Metzger, isn’t entirely bad in his eyes.

In an interview with GQ, Tillman asked the interviewer whether they believed that Metzger is a villain. When the interviewer admitted that they do believe that Metzger is at fault, Tillman said, “I’m not judging you, by the way. I think Metzger is doing his job. Does the job need to be taken to the level that he’s taking it? Maybe that’s up for debate.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Tillman addressed his own feelings on Metzger: “I had to stay away from what this guy is and what he isn’t. For me what’s more important is what’s he after? I had this colorful conversation with [director] Destin [Daniel Cretton] during some reshoots. He says, ‘Your character is hurting people.’ And I said, ‘My character is stopping someone from hurting people.’ Jean Grey and the powers she has, that’s not a small threat. The field of control she creates at the end of the movie, that’s terrifying.”

For what it’s worth, I do see Metzger as a villain, and I’m willing to draw a line between someone like Bill Metzger, and someone like the DC Universe’s Amanda Waller. Waller is ruthless and is very aware of the fact that what she’s doing crosses most people’s moral boundaries, but she’s willing to do it because she believes that it will protect the public. Metzger, on the other hand, had a teenage girl get kidnapped off the streets and then experimented on until she died. But that’s just my two cents.
