Star Wars sequel hero Finn DID defeat Kylo Ren in a lightsaber duel... behind the scenes during filming for The Force Awakens
John Boyega recently revealed that the epic victory of his character over Adam Driver's in Star Wars: The Force Awakens really did happen the way fans hoped... as an on-set blooper

There's a moment in Star Wars: The Force Awakens that some fans point to as a sort of "great almost." That is, when John Boyega's ex-Stormtrooper Finn picks up a lightsaber and prepares to go toe-to-toe with villain Kylo Ren, who's also wielding one. The moment ends without the two of them really going at it, leaving particularly fans of Finn's character wondering what might've been.
And to those fans, John Boyega himself has an answer.
Appearing at a spotlight panel during Florida Supercon 2025, the Attack the Block actor was asked by someone in the audience whether there were any behind-the-scenes stories or "bloopers" he could share from his time filming in the Star Wars franchise.
"You remember that lightsaber fight at the end of Force Awakens," responded Boyega, "With Kylo Ren? I disarmed that brother."
Calling on Disney to "release one of the tapes," Boyega then recounted the story of his off-screen (and off-script) duel with Kylo Ren, played in the film by Adam Driver.
"The guy is, like, 6-foot-something," Boyega said, "But that didn't matter. I was like a little bulldog next to that tall man. His saber flew into the snow and the whole crew just froze. I looked at Adam; everyone looked at me; and I was like, 'I'll whip your ass, boy.' It feel good."
"It happened a few times," Boyega continued, "I was like, 'Your Sith levels are worrying, my guy.' [...] That would obviously make Adam go hard at me again. That was a cool blooper that I enjoyed. You know, in some version of this [movie] that Kylo never got to Rey."
