The world fell in love with Krypto the Superdog when he made his live-action debut in James Gunn's Superman last year. As adorable as Krypto is, he also proved himself to be a pretty problematic dog, destroying parts of the Fortress of Solitude and being unable to contain his own prey drive. But that's okay, we still love him anyways. 

We'll next be seeing Krypto in this summer's Supergirl movie, and already, with the release of the film's official trailer, DC fans are stressed about the fate of Krypto. As can be seen in the trailer, the villainous Krem of the Yellow Hills shoots Krypto and incapacitates him, sending Kara on a crusade to save both her dog and a young girl named Ruthye. Now the question remains: would DC Studios really kill off Krypto in Supergirl? Since I myself have used the website "doesthedogdie.com" to look up whether or not an animal dies in a movie before I go see it, I can certainly understand why you, dear reader, are reading this article right now. 

Does the dog die in Supergirl?

So as of right now, we don't know if Krypto dies in Supergirl, given that the movie won't be released until June. However, there is some hope. In the comic that the Supergirl movie is based on - Tom King and Bilquis Evely's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow - Krypto gets shot with an arrow, but he survives. Of course, the Supergirl movie could take a different approach than the comic, so we'll have to wait and see. 

What happens to Krypto in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow?

So, in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #1 by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, Krem of the Yellow Hills shoots poor Krypto with an arrow barbed with "hunting poison," one that was deadly to animals. Krypto was in a bad way, on the brink of death, before the doctor caring for him told Supergirl that he could only be saved by an antidote made from a sample of the original poison. Luckily, in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #8, Krypto makes it out alive. 

So, is Krypto going to die in the Supergirl movie?

Given that Krypto lives in the original Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book story, and that James Gunn himself is a dog lover, it's unlikely that Krypto will die in the Supergirl movie. And killing off a major member of the Super-Family in only the second DC Universe movie would certainly be... a choice, especially since Ms. Kara has lost quite literally everyone from her home planet, except for her cousin Superman and Krypto. She has been through enough! If there's anyone who can get Krypto an antidote in three days, it's Kara. I believe in her. 

Of course, we could be wrong. Who expected (spoilers) almost all of the Suicide Squad to die at the start of Gunn's 2021 The Suicide Squad? 

Supergirl will be released in theaters on June 26, 2026.
