Our new Superman David Corenswet grew up on Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man

Just like the rest of us 90s babies, Superman's David Corenswet grew up on Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy with Tobey Maguire.

Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy left a mark on millennials who grew up watching those films in theaters - David Corenswet included. I remember feeling like my brain was exploding when Tobey Maguire's powers activated in that back alley, and he looked at his fingertips and saw tiny hairs protruding from his skin. Along with the X-Men films, the Raimi Spider-Man movies helped define the superhero genre onscreen in the early 2000s.

In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, David Corenswet delved into the impact that the superhero genre had on him as a kid. "I grew up on the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies, those were the superhero movies that I saw in theaters and that were really relevant to me, just because of the timing of when they came out," Corenswet began.

"And I think as a kid, I wouldn't describe myself as a kid who fit in that well, being a fan of the Marx Brothers. I had one very close friend who was also a fan of the Marx Brothers, and everybody else was kind of confused by me, I would say. There's something very romantic about the Peter Parker superhero story, which is that you're a nerd that gets bullied and then you get these amazing powers and you get to do cool things with them. And Superman I think is a different kind of superhero fantasy for a kid."

Something worth noting with both characters is that they're outsiders. Peter Parker feels ostracized for being weak and nerdy, while Clark Kent walks around with an enormous secret, that he's a freaking alien whose homeworld was destroyed. Both of these stories are appealing to kids and adults who, like Corenswet, feel like they don't quite fit in for one reason or another.

Corenswet stars in James Gunn's Superman movie, which will be out July 11.
