James Gunn's DC super couple keeps no secrets - especially Clark Kent's secret identity as Superman

If the new trailer for DC Studios' Superman is to be believed, it very much looks like Lois Lane knows Clark Kent's biggest secret already

One of the most surprising elements of the new trailer for James Gunn’s Superman comes right at the beginning of the whole thing: Lois Lane apparently knows that Clark Kent is Superman already.

What?

Okay, on the one hand, we shouldn’t be too surprised — Lois being in on Superman’s secret identity has been comic book canon since 1991’s Action Comics #662, and other versions of the characters have followed suit; think of the CW’s Superman & Lois TV show, for example — but at the same time, almost every version of the Lois/Clark romance has had the Daily Planet’s star reporter kept out of the loop for some period of time before the truth finally comes to light. Not in the new DCU, it seems; Lois and Clark will share one of their deepest secrets together within the first story they share together onscreen.

We couldn’t be happier.

It’s not just that Clark’s secret identity is historically flimsy — really, one of the greatest investigative reporters in the world gets fooled by a pair of glasses and someone hunching over a little? — but the idea that Clark Kent does not feel even slightly uncomfortable lying to Lois about who he really is has always felt just a little off, let’s be honest: how can a man who says that he stands for truth, justice, and the American way be okay with lying to the person he loves so casually on a regular basis?

Of course, there’s maybe more to what’s happening in the trailer than meets the eye — could Clark Kent be roleplaying as his alter ego, and Lois is unaware? Could she be hypnotized to forget at the end of the movie, a la 1981’s Superman II? — but we’re choosing to believe that the new DCU Superman is someone who reveals the truth to Lois early on in his career because it’s the right thing to do. Or, better yet, that Lois works it out for herself.

We’ll find out when Superman reaches theaters July 11. Watch the new trailer here.
