The Silver Surfer has a lot of emotional baggage in her MCU debut, according to the actor playing her in The Fantastic Four: First Steps

When you're the Herald of Galactus, you have to get used to being a little emotionally damaged.

It might not seem it, but it is remarkably difficult to portray a character who is emotionally restrained like the Silver Surfer. Julia Garner says that she had to go through a constant cycle of dredging up the tragic backstory to the Silver Surfer before suppressing those emotions again to help inform her performance in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

When asked about the character’s backstory and how much of it happened off-screen, Julia Garner explained that much of the Silver Surfer’s trauma is laid out for fans to see. “A lot of it you did see on screen,” she explained. “But I also just kind of took that and kind of went deeper with that and just almost… trying to figure out how that made me feel.”

Without spoiling anything for fans, the Silver Surfer is typically portrayed as having become the Herald of Galactus in order to save their planet from destruction. This means that they are doomed to invite death to other worlds while never being able to return to their own. They take a dispassionate approach to their role to function as the effective doom of entire planets. “I guess just processing the loss so much,” Garner continued. “But then trying to block all my feelings. So I was processing, processing, but then blocking it because that’s what she would do until it all kind of blows up at the end.”

That emotional explosion is set to play out in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which is out in cinemas right now.
