It looks like Nick Fury has been keeping a pretty big secret. This seems fitting, since Fury is a superspy, and the Marvel Studios streaming series Secret Invasion is all about espionage and deception. ‘Promises,’ the second episode of the Disney+ series, ended with a pretty big revelation. Not only is Nick Fury secretly married, but his wife also happens to be a Skrull. Wait, what?! This raises a lot of questions. Let’s unpack them all…

Who is Nick Fury’s wife Priscilla Fury?

Priscilla Fury doesn’t have much screentime in Secret Invasion so far, but the little we see has some interesting implications. Priscilla Fury lives in a home somewhere in Europe, hidden away from Fury’s colleagues and enemies. In fact, Fury has gone through such lengths to hide his marriage that he switches out cars before he returns home and doesn’t put on his wedding ring until he is in the house.

When we first see her, Priscilla is in Skrull form as she’s cooking. She shapeshifts into a human when she hears Fury open the door. Is Fury aware that his wife is a Skrull? Did this Skrull replace the real Priscilla at one point? Anything is possible, but the likely answer is that Fury is well aware of his wife’s alien heritage. In fact, there might be some clues to that during the episode’s prologue.

The episode opens with a flashback to 1997, where Fury asks a group of Skrulls to disguise themselves as humans while he finds them a new home. A Skrull named Varra is among the group, and she appears to have an affectionate relationship with Fury. In fact, you might notice a ring on her finger during the scene. Could this be an engagement ring? Varra’s actress is not listed in the closing credits for the episode. However, she sounds like Priscilla, and her Skrull form is almost identical to Priscilla's. The connection between Varra and Priscilla hasn’t been confirmed yet but seems to be almost certain.

Priscilla’s role in the series was reported last year, but Fury’s marital status might not be a surprise to people paying special attention to the MCU. In fact, Nick Fury mentions his wife kicking him out in the 2014 film Captain America: The Winter Soldier. At the time audiences assumed he was lying, since Steve Rogers’ apartment had been bugged. However, the reveal of Priscilla’s existence seems to give that line new context. Perhaps Nick was dangling the truth in front of our faces.

Even if Fury’s marriage isn’t a surprise, the fact that his wife is a Skrull certainly is. According to casting reports, Priscilla is an agent of S.W.O.R.D., the government agency seen in WandaVision. This raises more questions. They’re obviously trying to keep their marriage secret, but does Priscilla use the surname Fury when she’s at the agency? Who else is aware of her Skrull heritage? There is definitely something going on with Priscilla, and it will be interesting to see what we learn as the series progresses.

Priscilla Fury is played by Charlayne Woodard, an actress who is best known for her stage work. In 1978 her performance in Ain’t Misbehavin’ earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical. Woodard later went on to become a celebrated playwright, winning a Los Angeles Critics Award and an NAACP Award for her play Pretty Fire. Woodard has also appeared in many films and television shows, such as Bones, ER, and Unbreakable.

Is Priscilla Fury a character in Marvel Comics?

Priscilla Fury seems to be an original character to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it’s possible that she’s based off of the character Varra, a minor character introduced in New Avengers #4 (2014). Varra was a Skrull/Kree hybrid who served as a member of the Knights of Infinite, a group of hybrids working to unite the Kree and Skrull empires.

As for Fury’s marital ties, the character has never had a wife named Priscilla. The Ultimate Universe version of Fury was once married to Monica Chang, a secret agent who briefly took on the codename Black Widow. According to Ultimate Avengers #10 (2010), the marriage fell apart when Monica discovered that Nick had slept with all of her female relatives and friends, including her sister and mother. Ouch!

The original version of Nick Fury from Marvel’s mainstream universe has fathered a few children, but he’s never been married. Nick’s son Mikel Fury was the result of a liaison with a weapons smuggler named Amber D’Alexis. Nick Fury Jr. (who is modeled after Samuel L. Jackson) came from a brief love affair with a spy named Nia Jones. Nick Fury also had a long and tumultuous relationship with a secret agent named Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Marriage regularly crossed their minds, but it was not meant to be.

Nick Fury is a complicated person, and it probably takes a special kind of person to be married to him. Where does Priscilla Fury fit in with Marvel’s world of spies, aliens, and heroes? For now, the answer is unclear. Perhaps she keeps things close to the chest, like her husband. Needless to say, Popverse will be keeping a close eye on Priscilla Fury as Secret Invasion continues.
