Zack Snyder has already created a director's cut of his new Netflix sci-fi movie, Rebel Moon

The extended edition will feature almost an hour of extra footage, says the filmmaker

It took a concerted effort by fandom — and no small amount of social media pressure — to convince Warner Bros. to offer Zack Snyder’s director’s cut of Justice League. When it comes to his upcoming science fiction feature for Netflix, however, there’s already plans to give the people what they want… as long as they can be patient.

Talking to Netflix’s Tudum platform about Rebel Moon — the trailer for which has just been released by the streamer, and can be seen below — Snyder said that a director’s cut of the movie is already planned, and that it’ll be just what fans are looking for… especially after they’ve seen the first edition of the movie.

“The director’s cut is close to an hour of extra content, so I think it’s a legitimate extended universe version,” the filmmaker said. “You really get to see a lot. It’s just more painted-in all the way.” He added, “We shot scenes just for the director’s cut. So in that way, it’s really a revelation because it gives that second kick at the can for big fans, like a real discovery that they would not [otherwise] get. I’m really excited about it!”

When it comes to the subject of director’s cuts as a whole, Snyder admitted, “I don’t know how I got into this director’s cut thing, but what I will say about it is that, for me, the director’s cuts have always been something I had to fight for in the past and nobody wanted it. It was this bastard child that I was always trying to put together because they felt like there was a deeper version.”

This time, at least, the fight is over… but the wait, it seems, is just beginning.

Rebel Moon — or the first of two chapters from the series, in its shorter form, at least — will debut on Netflix December 22. (The second chapter will be released April 19, 2024.) It’s unknown when the director’s cut will be released - but you have to think, why would Snyder and Netflix openly talk about the possibility without a plan (or an idea) in place.
