It might not be the end of the world, but it’s certainly beginning to look like it for Prime Video’s The Boys. With a fourth season in the offing for some point in 2024, the promotional engine is slowly starting to roll out with new teaser images and a trailer that suggests that things are going to get even messier than before for Butcher, Homelander, and everyone involved in the struggle against Vought International. Maybe you really can’t make an omelette without breaking a few heads.

When is The Boys season 4 release date?

When audiences should expect the new season of The Boys remains a mystery, although we can expect it at some point in 2024. The show was recommissioned by Prime Video in June 2022, a month before the finale of the third season was aired, and production wrapped back in April 2023. However, post-production work on the show was held up by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, with showrunner and executive producer Eric Kripke tweeting in late June, “When #Saso4 drops depends on how long the #WGA Strike goes. No answer yet. Tell the studios to make a fair deal!”

He updated post-strike on November 9, tweeting, “Here's the update. Editing: done. VFX: halfway done. Music & sound: quarter done. Now that the SAG strike is over (yay), the actors can record additional dialogue. No airdate yet, but will be worth the wait.”

Officially, the show returns "in 2024," according to Prime Video. So... sometime relatively soon, then.

What is the plot of The Boys season 4?

By the end of the third season of The Boys, the status quo of the series had shifted: The Seven as-was was no more, with Queen Maeve surrendering her powers (and faking her own death), and Starlight leaving the team altogether after working undercover for the season to assist The Boys. After surrendering her Starlight identity — and destroying her costume — now she’s just Annie… and officially working alongside Hughie, Butcher et al.

That’s not all; Butcher has been told he has between a year and 18 months to live after his exposure to Temp V, and he also has to come to terms with the fact that his own son chose the Homelander over him… which led to the Homelander announcing to the public that Ryan is his son… and killing a protester at the event, much to everyone’s seeming excitement.

As if that wasn’t enough, it turns out that Victoria Neuman — who Butcher believed was an ally in his fight against the supers — might actually be the most dangerous enemy of all, after she ends up as the Vice Presidential candidate in the upcoming election after the murder of the previous pick.

Season 4 is going to pick up all of that. No wonder Jack Quaid, who plays Hughie, is teasing the season being “very intense.” He promised, “Audiences are still going to be surprised and will be really into the direction that it takes. We take some chances that I think are really awesome. It's our best [season] yet.”

The official synopsis of the season accompanying the first teaser trailer release (see below) is certainly filled with potential: "The world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under the muscly thumb of Homelander, who is consolidating his power. Butcher, with only months to live, has lost Becca’s son as well as his job as The Boys’ leader. The rest of the team are fed up with his lies. With the stakes higher than ever, they have to find a way to work together and save the world before it’s too late."

Is The Boys season 4 the final season?

The Boys is going to continue past season 4; while no fifth season has been officially announced, Eric Kripke tweeted that the season 4 finale was “not the series finale, there will be more!” So… season 5 and maybe more awaits…!

Who is in The Boys season 4?

As per Prime Video, the cast for the fourth season of the show will include Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Nathan Mitchell, Colby Minifie, Claudia Doumit, Cameron Crovetti, Valorie Curry, and Susan Heyward. Jeffrey Dean Morgan has also joined the show in an unnamed role.

Is there a trailer for The Boys season 4?

There's a teaser trailer, if that counts.

Any trailer that says "all democracies fail," and then asks, "but if you crush the masses, who builds your monuments?" is certainly one that doesn't lack for ambition, we'll say that...

Is there a poster for The Boys season 4?

It's not an official poster release, but two new teaser images were released November 8, featuring the Homelander and Butcher in very different places, emotionally...

So there’s no clue about what happened after The Boys season 3?

I didn’t say that; according to Eric Kripke (again!), all of the recently completed Gen V season 1 takes place between seasons 3 and 4 of the The Boys, and has “some storylines that carry over to S4.” There are also characters that appear in both shows. Think of it as The Boys season 3.5, perhaps - and therefore, essential viewing if you haven't already checked it out.
