Alien: Earth episode one features an adorable easter egg to the original Ridley Scott film just a few minutes into the story [minor spoilers]

Yes, that sure looks like [REDACTED], but it’s almost impossible the member of the Nostromo crew is on Alien: Earth’s spacefaring USCSS Maginot

This article contains mild spoilers for Alien: Earth, episode one.

I don’t know about you, but I was keeping my eyes absolutely peeled for easter eggs during the first episode of Alien: Earth. Well, as peeled as I could keep them, when I wasn’t cowering at alien bugs sniffing their way around a dude’s eye socket. But hey, I’m pretty sure I managed to spot the first of what I assume are a host of references showrunner Noah Hawley has worked in to the original 1979 Alien film.

Specifically, I spotted during the intro to the doomed ship USCSS Maginot, which carries on it not just a host of freaky new lifeforms… but at least one orange tabby cat.

Yep, though we were more than certain that we were going to see some genetic relative of the original xenomorph popping up on screen, I was sure surprised to see what could very well have been a clone of one Jonesy the Space Cat, the only survivor (save Ellen Ripley) of the original human contact with the titular horror at the heart of the Alien franchise.

But don’t mistake similarity for the real deal. According to the timeline laid out for FX’s Alien prequel, the events we witnessed on the science vessel Maginot (which crash-lands on earth bearing a host of dangerous, non-human lifeforms, kicking off the story) happen while our pal Jones and his spacemom Ripley are snoozing away in cryosleep, not to meow his way into our hearts (and horror history) for another few years.

Then again, who knows? Maybe Noah Hawley is going to reveal that Jones has had godlike teleportation powers this whole time. I mean, did you watch Legion? The dude has done weirder.

Alien: Earth episodes one and two are streaming on Hulu now.

Grant DeArmitt

Grant DeArmitt: Grant DeArmitt (he/him) likes horror, comics, and the unholy union of the two. In the past, and despite their better judgment, he has written for Nightmare on Film Street and Newsarama. He lives in Brooklyn with his partner, Kingsley, and corgi, Legs.
