Chicago Fire season 15 is going to be a bit of a bittersweet chapter for longtime viewers of the hit show, as Dermot Mulroney is officially taking the next firepole out of town. The actor, who has played Chief Dom Pascal since season 13, is departing the series for good, but fans will get one more chance to bid him farewell before his tenure on the show wraps.

That’s what we learned from a People magazine article published August 3, in which Mulroney both gave a heartfelt sendoff to the show and spoke about his involvement with the upcoming season 15.

"Now, this season," the actor said during a public appearance, adding, "Sadly, I have [only] one episode. I finish on Tuesday and they write the character off. So we gave it our all for two seasons. They wrote an incredible storyline that put me as an actor in high challenge. So I loved every minute of it. Thanks for asking. [I’m] sad to see it go."

Interestingly, Mulroney doesn’t say that the episode in question will be the pilot episode, so we may get a few episodes into the season before bidding our adieus to chief Dom. Of course, this by no means points to us not seeing an actor as prolific as Mulroney again, but hopefully, his exit from the show also leaves room for the occasional guest star spot, on either Fire or any of the One Chicago branches.

I guess it depends on how the writers choose to "write the character off," in Mulroney’s words.

Chicago Fire is streaming on Peacock, with season 15 set to premiere October 7.
