After the success of The Walking Dead and Invincible, Robert Kirkman is not done expanding into the world of television. In partnership with Hasbro, Kirkman and Skybound Entertainment will produce an adult animated TV show called Energon Universe, based on the comic book series that combines the lore of G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Void Rivals. Writer Joe Henderson is set to write and showrun the animated adaptation.
As reported by Deadline, the Energon Universe show "will be broad, with adult sensibility in the vein of Kirkman's gritty adult animated series Invincible." The show is "expected to be taken out to buyers shortly," meaning that it will be shopped around to different studios and streamers until someone picks it up.
The Energon Universe comics have been a hit for Hasbro, with Deadline reporting that "over 7 million combined units" have been sold worldwide. The universe kicked off with 2023's Void Rivals #1, an issue I remember there being significant speculation around when it went on sale at the comic shop I was working at at the time. Since Void Rivals #1 was a Kirkman creation that featured a Transformers character at the end of the issue, the speculation was fueled by assumptions that Kirkman would one day try to adapt Void Rivals for the small screen. And here we are.
We'll keep you updated on whether the Energon Universe series gets picked up anywhere. Until then, we look forward to the adaptation of Chip Zdarsky and Ramon K. Perez's comic, Stillwater, that's been picked up by Prime Video.
