One of the biggest mysteries going into season 2 of Hazbin Hotel is whether we’ll ever see the vicious angel Adam again, after he was unexpectedly murdered at the end of season one by the demon Niffty. Series creator Vivienne “VivziePop” Medrano and Adam voice actor Alex Brightman had each hinted that something was in the works, but until now no one had revealed what.
At New York Comic Con’s Hazbin Hotel panel, Medrano showed a new song, “Gravity” sung by Adam’s former lieutenant Lute, who is now in charge of the angelic forces. And Adam floats around her, mostly silent but occasionally adding a bit of harmony.
In the Hazbin Hotel press room after the panel, Medrano revealed, “In season 2 Adam becomes the manifested representation of Lute’s deterioriating mental health/grief.”
“Lute is a character that’s not taken as seriously as she should be. Adam was the only character that really gave her that support, and without him it’s like a huge emptiness,” Medrano explained. “So she’s filled it with this manifestation of him that exists in her mind.”
Medrano and Brightman both shared how exciting it was to get to play with Adam in this way. “I was very determined to have more time with Adam,” Medrano shared. “I really wanted more time with him as a villain. And this also allows us to make him extra—this is her version of this guy.”
“It was a ball,” said Brightman. “I loved playing Adam. I loved being able to kind of just say whatever the hell I wanted, things that I would be crucified for if I said out in public. I’m so thrilled to be able to put my voice back to him.”
Getting to exist as someone's psychological delusion had other advantages as well. “I get to be a joke sniper now,” Brightman shared, "to just come in and be fun and have no real stakes. It’s the best. Second banana never tasted so good.”
The new season of Hazbin Hotel premieres on Amazon Prime on October 29th.
