Why Dunk doesn’t need to be seven feet tall in HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, according to actor Peter Claffey
The TV version of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Dunk won’t be seven foot tall like his literature counterpart

Peter Claffey is the tallest person in most of the rooms he enters. The Irish actor stands at 6 ft 5 in, which is pretty tall, but not as tall as Ser Duncan the Tall aka Dunk. In the George R.R. Martin Dunk and Egg novellas, Dunk is described as 6 ft 11 in, making him an imposing figure.
Claffey will be playing Dunk in the HBO adaptation of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. When asked if he was bothered by the fact that he isn’t as tall as his book counterpart, Claffey admitted he thought about it.
“A little bit,” Dunk actor Peter Claffey tells Popverse’s Ashley Victoria Robinson at New York Comic Con 2025. “It’s quite ambiguous in the book as well. It’s like he was shy of seven feet tall. But that could mean anything. That could mean halfway to seven feet tall and stuff. But we worked around with some different things and he still looks as huge as he possibly could.”
It also helps that most of Claffey’s scenes involve him standing next to his 11-year-old costar Dexter Sol Ansell, which makes him look taller by comparison. Still, 6 ft 5 in is pretty amazing on its own, so let’s forget about the remaining six inches and cut the actor some slack.
