HBO makes long-term bet on Game of Thrones, confirming shows through 2028 at least

HBO is committing itself to eradicating an "off-season" when it comes to its Game of Thrones spinoff shows by renewing both House of the Dragon and new series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

Get ready to ride, because HBO has no intention of leaving Westeros any time soon.

The Game of Thrones prequel show, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, may not be out yet, but it's already been renewed for a season 2. Likewise, House of the Dragon has been renewed for a season 4, according to a new press release from HBO. Game of Thrones fans can rest assured that HBO is stepping up to the plate, committing itself to the remaining storytelling ground left to cover with House of the Dragon, in particular.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will launch on January 1, 2026, at 10 PM ET/PT - with season 2 expected to arrive in 2027. Then, we'll be headed back to Westeros in the summer of 2026 with House of the Dragon season 3. Season 4 of House of the Dragon will arrive in 2028. With this schedule in place, HBO will no longer have an "off-season" with regard to its Game of Thrones shows. Every year, at least until 2028, will feature a Game of Thrones release.

This comes at a time when the network is still in its nascent stages of Game of Thrones spinoffs. House of the Dragon wasn't exactly a difficult sell to make to audiences, given how unsatisfied so many fans felt with Daenerys Targaryen's fate in Game of Thrones's final season. More people with white hair and dragons beefing with each other? Why not. It still remains to be seen how viewers will respond to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, but that story does feature a Targaryen in a leading role anyway.

If you've read George R.R. Martin's Fire and Blood book, a sliver of which provides the basis for the events of House of the Dragon thus far, you'd know that the spinoff show has been taking its sweet time in depicting the Dance of the Dragons conflict between Rhaenyra Targaryen and Aegon II. I'd go as far as to say that it's moving painfully slow. (Remember the whole subplot that spanned multiple episodes in season 2 where Daemon is just wandering around Harrenhal having weird visions of his mother? Cue the passive-aggressive Oscars speech music already.)

Personally? I would love to see HBO greenlight a spinoff show about Jaehaerys the Conciliator, the real MVP of the Targaryen family. Make it happen, HBO! After all, 2029 is currently looking a little empty...

House of the Dragon season 2 may be over, but Popverse is still in the Westeros spirit, and we've got more Game of Thrones articles than could fit on a spiky chair. We've got everything you need to dive into the series, including:
