When Andy and Barbara Muschietti began developing the It prequel Welcome to Derry, they weren’t setting out to make a '60s period piece. It’s just how the math worked out.
“So, 1962 is according to our timeline that we did in the movies, because obviously in the book it’s 58, we translated that to 89. So, our first step into our journey towards this fascinating incursion into the past is 1962,” Welcome to Derry producer Andy Muschietti says during a panel at New York Comic Con.
“Because it’s 27 years before, and you know every season is a Pennywise cycle, which is 27 years,” Welcome to Derry producer Barbara Muschietti says.
“It’s a previous cycle, which is for us very special because also 1962 is closer to 1958 in a way,” Andy Muschietti says. “What we couldn’t do in the movie in terms of era, because we transposed it to the ‘80s, we’re doing now. So, I feel that this, in many ways, this first season is closer in spirit and also in textures and feel to what the book was, even though it’s not the same characters. But some of them are sisters, and there’s bloodlines and a lot of things that you will discover.”
It: Welcome to Derry premieres October 26 on HBO.
