Why Helluva Boss has way more freedom than Hazbin Hotel “to goof”

Helluva Boss is produced by Hazbin Hotel creator Vivienne Medrano's production company, SpindleHorse

The Hellaverse has been expanding across Prime Video, and it isn't stopping any time soon. While the mainline show Hazbin Hotel has won fans around the world with its particular brand of humor and musical theater soundtrack, its spinoff show, Helluva Boss, is a gem that is not to be missed.

As you might imagine, there is a lot riding on the shoulders of a show like Hazbin Hotel, which is produced by A24, Amazon MGM Studios, and Bento Box Entertainment. "More money, more problems," as the saying goes. But Helluva Boss isn't produced by those three companies, and for that reason, it has more freedom "to goof" around with its subject matter.

In an interview with We're Watching What, Hellaverse composer Sam Haft revealed how Helluva Boss isn't made under the same financial constraints as its older sibling show, Hazbin Hotel.

“Wherever you need to find a dollar for anything [on Hazbin Hotel], you need to talk to 3 different production companies and have them all align, and have everyone go… ‘Okay, turn all the keys simultaneously, we spend the dollar.’ With Helluva Boss, it’s just made by [Hellaverse creator] Viv’s studio SpindleHorse, so it’s just like, ‘Oh, could we do this? Oh yeah, I’ll pay for that,'" Haft said.

So that's that. When there are fewer companies involved, it's more efficient for the Hellaverse team to explore sillier gags on the shows. That said, getting A24 and Amazon MGM Studios to produce Hazbin Hotel is certainly nothing to sneeze at. A24 in particular is one of the most well-regarded production companies working today, so I can't think of a world where anyone wouldn't want A24 to be one of those hands on the keys of television show finance.
