Helluva Boss is getting to be its most honest, craziest, goriest, and horny self with Prime Video

Helluva Boss's Brandon Rogers says new streamer Prime Video is totally "mitts off" when it comes to creative control

Stop me if you've heard this one: A popular show or film series (usually with a cult fanbase) is acquired by a large company. Then not long after, the fans revolt - claiming that their beloved franchise has changed for the worse, and laying the blame at the studio that purchased it. I'm sure you can think of a multitude of examples, although I won't name any names (it's too early to start that fight, gang). What I will name, though, is the TV show you don't have to worry about that happening to: Helluva Boss.

At least, that's what series lead and cowriter Brandon Rogers tells us.

Popverse recently sat down with arguably the most influential person on Helluva (save series creator Vivienne Medrano) to discuss its recent acquisition by Amazon' Prie Video, the studio that also produces sister series Hazbin Hotel. And when we asked whether or not he felt a shift in the writers' room when the Prime Video switch was announced, Rogers was adamant that he did not.

"Amazon Prime loves the show," Rogers began, "They give a lot of, you know, suggestions and feedback when we write the episodes, but they're way hands-off. They really don't interfere at all with our writing, which allows us to go above and beyond, because now we don't have to abide by the YouTube guidelines anymore. We can make the show however crazy and gory and sexual we want to make it."

You read that right, Hellaverse fan - Helluva Boss being on Prime Video actually allows for more freedom, according to the voice of its titular character, Blitzo. To be fair, that freedom is less of the "you tell your own story" kind and more "you can say the f-word" variety, but still.

"Our writing really has always been the rogue show that can do whatever it wants to do," Rogers told us. "Because we've never been under anyone's jurisdiction, besides Viv and the YouTube community guidelines. So we've never really felt like there were limitations. And when Amazon Prime joined, they had their mitts off of the whole thing. I mean, it's unheard of for a streaming service to make that big of an acquisition and let the creator retain full rights for all creative choices. An artist's dream is to have a studio give them their money and then not interfere with it."

In a world of storytellers' art turned into preciously-guarded IP by execs who often, frankly, don't know what the hell they're doing, a case like this is "unheard of" indeed. We're as happy to hear that Brandon feels free to keep making the show the way he wants to make it, and we desperately hope things continue that way.

Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss are streaming now on Prime Video. For more of Brandon Rogers's comedy, head to his YouTube page
