The first season for DC Studios and HBO's Lanterns series has not even been released yet, and already, a co-showrunner has been hired for the show's sophomore season, according to a new report.

According to The Ankler, Lanterns showrunner Damon Lindelof will not be back for season 2 of the show. Instead, comic writer and television producer Christopher Cantwell has been hired as a co-showrunner. Here is what The Ankler's Lesley Goldberg wrote of the incoming changing of the guard: 

"Sources also say a writers room for season two of Lanterns has been hard at work for more than a month even though HBO hasn’t handed out an official renewal. Lindelof will not return for season two, per sources — he initially signed on for a single season and is now focused on his HBO limited series thriller, The Chain. [Tom] King, who is working on DC’s animated Mister Miracle series, is also not part of the writers room for season two but remains involved. To fill the void, Halt and Catch Fire creator Chris Cantwell was hired in May to serve as a co-showrunner alongside [Chris] Mundy."

The report cites an unnamed source as saying that all involved "hoped there would be a season two of Lanterns, but the first season was plotted in a way where it has a beginning, middle and end, and the mystery is revolved." That said there is some connection with the wider DCU; the same source reportedly added that producers "platformed some storylines to meld with James and Peter’s vision for the DC universe — particularly [Superman sequel] Man of Tomorrow, which is shooting now."

Lanterns will debut on HBO on August 16.
