Does Daredevil: Born Again take inspiration from current events? It's not so straightforward, says cast

"It's not a virtue of the show that we somehow created a world where people were behaving horridly — people have been doing that," says Wilson Bethel at C2E2

The second season of Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again has drawn some attention for putting a corrupt politician in power, and building a situation where he creates his own private police force made up of masked officers acting seemingly without oversight against the population they are, in theory, meant to be serving — something that feels unfortunately timely when viewed through the lens of current events. According to the people responsible for making the show, however, it’s not that the series looks to the White House for inspiration.

“Go back in time and look at the dates of when we were filming this stuff, and then, imagine: if we were filming it then, when was it written?” Charlie Cox said when asked about the parallels between the series and what’s happening in the real world today at the Daredevil: Born Again panel at C2E2 2026. “Vincent [D’Onofrio] gets asked this question a lot about his character, but he built that character in 2014 — like no-one was talking about a certain someone for President in 2014… and if they were, they were crazy.

Wilson Bethel added, “Just remember that authoritarianism has existed for a long time, and if you're seeing traces of it [in both the show and real life], that might be because people are drawing from the same authoritarian playbooks they've been drawing from. You know what I mean? So it's not a virtue of the show that we somehow created a world where people were behaving horridly — people have been doing that, and they've been taking their own cues [from history].”

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 airs new episodes weekly on Disney+.
