ABC's Lost originally killed Jorge Garcia's Hurley in the pilot, and Josh Holloway's Sawyer did it (and was scared to do it)

Lost almost began with Sawyer accidentally causing Hurley’s death

Hugo 'Hurley' Reyes appeared in 107 episodes of Lost. He was one of the only castaways to survive all six seasons. In fact, the series ends with Hurley becoming the new guardian of the island. It’s an interesting journey for a character that was initially planned to be killed in the first episode. The original story treatment for the Lost pilot had Hurley falling to his death from a cliff after Sawyer was unable to pull him up. Not only would this have drastically changed the course of the series, but it also would’ve made it hard for the audience to get behind Sawyer.

“In the original pilot, they had me drop Jorge [Garcia] and he died,” Sawyer actor Josh Holloway says during a Florida Supercon panel.  “I was like, ‘I’m dead. First season.’ You don’t come back from that. Luckily, a new script came in, and that was not in it. But he was, like you said, a bit of an a-hole. And so, I fought for any humanity I could find in him. So that letter, I was like, ‘Oh fuck, this could save me.’ I really leaned into his humanity, because it was very little in the beginning, and they let that grow, luckily.”

Josh Holloway’s charisma went a long way into making Sawyer a lovable character. But would that have been enough to make the audience forgive him for dropping Hurley? Thankfully, we’ll never have to know.
