Saying goodbye is bittersweet. Returning immediately after an emotional goodbye can be downright awkward.
In 2018 Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was preparing to say goodbye. The Marvel spy drama had been told they wouldn’t be getting renewed, so their fifth season finale would be their final episode. The episode, appropriately titled ‘The End,’ featured Daisy resolving the Destroyer of Worlds prophecy, Coulson preparing for his death, and the team splitting up.
The final scene wrapped, and the actors said goodbye. Then a call came from ABC.
“They didn’t know,” Gregg says during a panel at Space Con 2025. “We never knew. Ours was the first Marvel superhero show on TV, and trying to be on ABC. We tried a lot of stuff which I loved, and every year they’d be like, ‘Well, we don’t know if you’re coming back.’ So, when it was time to shoot [the season five finale] it looked like it was all over.”
“Our last day of shooting, I was saying goodbye to people. We were all a mess, and then we got a call, ‘Turns out we’re doing six and seven, 13 episodes each. And we’ll figure out [a way to bring Coulson back.] You’re probably this alien guy. We’ll figure it out later.’”
“Yeah, it was a mess. It was sad,” Chloe Bennet adds. “It turns out you’re not the Destroyer of Worlds. You bruised a few worlds and we forgive you,” Gregg jokes. “And we’ll figure out a way to come back. Time travel.” Bennet says.
It turns out all they had to do was get Clark Gregg to play an alien named Sarge who looks just like Coulson. Yes, it’s strange, but it’s hardly the strangest thing that ever happened on a Marvel show.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is streaming on Disney+.
