Is Superman coming to Peacemaker? James Gunn teases a "really, really, really big cameo" for season 2 of the HBO Max DC drama

Breakout the Batman fancasts and the Superman popcorn buckets - James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU is in full swing. This summer's Superman is set to bring an all-new world of gods and monsters to the big screen, and then, just a little while later the DCU will return to HBO Max with a new season of the John Cena-starring Peacemaker. And according to Gunn, this upcoming season will see some pretty huge DC characters make the jump from cinemas to streaming... with one possible cameo being the Man of Steel himself?
Or maybe not - let's dive into it.
Peacemaker creator and Superman director Gunn was recently teasing the second season of his Suicide Squad spinoff in a May 26 interview with Entertainment Weekly. Gunn began by talking about something that we know for sure will carry over between the Superman movie and Peacemaker, that is, the enigmatic Quantum Unfolding Chamber.
"You've seen what we call the QUC," Gunn tells his interviewer, "The Quantum Unfolding Chamber, in the first season of Peacemaker, and we see more about that technology in Superman [...] The QUC is the center of the story in Peacemaker season 2."
Gunn follows by talking about several familiar faces that will be in both the aforementioned show and movie: Isabela Merced's Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner, and Sean Gunn's Maxwell Lord. But remember, that's not a spoiler or a tease - all three of those folks were already shown in footage from the Peacemaker season 2 first-look trailer. No, the tease comes a little while later in the interview.
"We see a lot of different characters from Superman [...] and then we see a bunch of other characters later on in the season from other parts of the DCU and from Superman. There might even be one really, really, really big cameo near the end of the show."
I won't lie to you, folks - I don't know how Gunn could've imagined this not seeming like a Superman tease for the end of Peacemaker season 2. Maybe if there was one less "really" in his description of the cameo, it could've been argued that Gunn's pointing at an Amanda Waller or one of the Creature Commandos. But three "really"s? You might as well hold up an S-shield in the background, James.
But hey, maybe I'm just reading into this too much. I suppose a "really, really, really big cameo" could also refer to Supergirl, who we know will appear in the Superman movie and is headed to the bigscreen herself in 2026's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. And if we're talking about movie headliners that could make a Peacemaker appearance, might we consider the idea of a Clayface cameo?
I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
Peacemaker season 2 comes to HBO Max August 21, 2025.
