One of the most interesting parts of Smallville was the father-son dynamic between Lex and Lionel Luthor. Anytime the two shared a scene together, you could cut the tension with a knife. A lot of this was due to the chemistry between the two actors, Michael Rosenbaum (Lex) and John Glover (Lionel). However, Rosenbaum had an interesting method for fostering that chemistry, which involved getting under John Glover’s skin.
“When I started working with [Michael Rosenbaum], I wanted to wring his neck,” Lionel Luthor actor John Glover says during a Smallville panel at New York Comic Con 2022. “I realized he was being Lex so that I could get pissed off at him as a dad. So, it worked. I saw it as an acting skill on Michael’s part, because I’m very generous.”
