Erica Durance’s Lois Lane added a “breath of fresh air” to Smallville, according to co-star Tom Welling

Smallville’s Tom Welling says that Erica Durance coming in as Lois Lane was just what the show needed

It’s hard to look back at Smallville and not think about Erica Durance’s portrayal as Lois Lane. The actress was such a big part of the series, which makes it weird to remember that she wasn’t in the first three seasons. Durance made her debut in the season four premiere, ‘Crusade,’ and everything just clicked. From her chemistry with Welling to her dynamic presence, it’s hard to imagine the series without her.

“I thought it was great,” Tom Welling says during a Smallville panel at MCM London Comic Con 2022. “I think it was a breath of fresh air. That was always the thing of whether it was guest stars or a new actress to the cast. I loved it because it was new energy.”

While Welling was thrilled, Durance was a nervous wreck.

“It was terrifying, but it all happened quite quickly,” Erica Durance says. “I just remember kind of being in a state of shock most of the time. I ended up getting the part, and I’m on set, and I’m working, and I’m like, It’s okay, it’s no big deal. Just make this person unique to you. And then I looked, and they put up the slate in front, and it’s said Smallville and then was like Lois Lane or whatever, and I just freaked out inside the elevator by myself before anybody could see me.”
