Growing to be Alec Guinness' age when he debuted in the original Star Wars is giving more nuance to the Obi-Wan Kenobi role for Ewan McGregor

Ewan McGregor appreciated the chance to take Obi-Wan to a place where he's lost so much.

Ewan McGregor appreciated the chance in the recent Disney+ Kenobi series to revisit the character more than two decades after the first Star Wars prequel was released. He got the opportunity to present a fresh take on the Jedi Master who had been put through the ringer after his fellow Jedi were slaughtered by Order 66 in the Great Jedi Purge, and the Empire rose to power.

"In the new series, I loved playing him older, playing him closer to Alex Guinness's age," McGregor says at FAN EXPO Chicago. "I loved playing him with the whole idea of taking this man we know was a capable general, somebody you could completely rely on and take him to a place he lost so much, so many friends. The ones he hadn't lost are in hiding. He's lost his faith. I thought it was fascinating to start the story there. I loved playing him in that way. Part of that was just being older. I am quite old now."

McGregor, who's also starred in films like Trainspotting and Moulin Rouge, is in fact only 54 years old. Guinness was in his early 60s when he filmed Star Wars, but looked much older than his age in a distinguished way.
