Does Stranger Things' David Harbour feel "relief" now that season 5 is ending? The answer is complicated

Speaking to fellow Marvel-ite Scarlett Johansson, Thunderbolts* and Stranger Things star Harbour says that he both adores his castmates and is very excited to control his own facial hair

Ten years is a long time to spend in Hawkins, Indiana, even if you're only on the set. There's plenty of friends to be made there, though, so when Stranger Things star David Harbour was asked about his feelings regarding the series's end, his answer was pretty complex. Although, as you might have guessed from our favorite blue collar hero Jim Hopper, the answer did have something to do with facial hair.

Let's back up a second. - Harbour was recently interviewed for Interview Magazine by none other than A-lister (and fellow Marvel super-Russian) Scarlett Johansson. Having starred together in 2021's Black Widow, the pair apparently have struck up quite the friendship, allowing for Johansson to get the truth from Harbour about the ending of his longtime Netflix series.

"You’ve completed Stranger Things," said the Jurassic World Rebirth star, "Is that a relief?"

"When I started I loved it so much," Harbour began, "Buddies of mine who’d done TV shows for many years said, 'By season three or four you’ll be running.' And I was like, 'Never! I love all these guys so much.' And then you get to a certain point where you’re like, 'How much more story is there?' You’re having to play a lot of the same beat, and there’s a feeling where you’re like, 'I want to take a risk. I want to do something that people haven’t seen me do before.' So yeah, after 10 years, it’s like, 'Okay.'

Johansson knew what Harvour was talking about. As part of a long-term commitment herself (the MCU), Johansson says that there were times she felt like she was "a device to move [the story] along,"

"And if you’re committed to five and a half months of [filming]," she continues, "It’s like, 'Okay. I can’t paint my nails, I can’t get a haircut.' These sound like silly problems, but your identity is wrapped up in this job for a long time, and if you’re not doing engaging work as an actor, you feel a little cagey sometimes."

"It’s the same thing with this show," Harbour agrees, "There’d be certain seasons where you feel like, 'I’m going to go in this different direction.' But as you say, a piece of your psyche is occupied with this group of people and this storyline. I don’t paint my nails, but I get that idea of 'I can’t get a haircut' or 'I can’t shave this freaking mustache.'"

Waitaminute, so you're saying SciFi dad David Harbour doesn't love doing multiple, sweaty action takes with scratchy facial hair? Somebody better tell the makeup department on Doomsday.

Stranger Things season 5, volume one debuts November 26 on Netflix, followed by volume 2 on December 25, and the ultimate finale of the series on December 31.
