How the Boys cast made a major change to the season 2 finale script just before shooting was about to begin
The Boys were meant to be in that explosive season 2 courtroom scene until Karl Urban and the cast said it didn't make any sense.

There are always big changes that happen to any script before it makes it to air. The finale of season two episode seven of The Boys is a pretty explosive affair, but the titular heroes were originally meant to be much closer to the action. However, after talking with the cast, Karl Urban messaged showrunner Erik Kripke and explained that it didn’t sound like something The Boys would do. So they changed it.
The finale of season two of The Boys ends with a congressional hearing into the actions of Vought. However, before anyone can actually testify, multiple people’s heads explode on live TV. It is, like much of The Boys, a pretty gruesome affair as The Boys watch on television. Originally, though, they were in the courtroom to see the whole thing, despite being wanted fugitives at the time.
That last bit is what caught the attention of The Boys cast. During their reunion panel at MCM London 2025, Laz Alonso explained that there is a collaborative process that goes on when they see something in the script that seems to go against what their character would do.
“I think that’s what we all really appreciate about our show in particular, is that, you know, before we get on set, when we read the script, there may be some moments where we might feel, organically, that our characters might take a different choice, and Kripke always had an open-door policy where we can pitch what we think. That our character may do in that moment or suggest what do you think this or can we try this, and a lot of times, you know… he would go with our version or our ideas.”
That open-door policy and collaborative approach really changed the finale of The Boys season two episode seven.
“I remember in season, I think it was season two,” Alonso continued. “There was a scene in the script… We were supposed to be on the run. The Boys were on the run. And in the script, they had us dressed in suits in court. Remember the court scene where all the heads start popping? And when we read that, you know, as a team, The Boys, we all read it and we came back to each other like, yo. We were really having a problem with us being on the run, wanted characters or being fugitives, and being in a court scene. I mean, it’s a federal court in suits. It just didn’t feel like it was organic and authentic, so we all kind of tried to pitch it to Kripke, and obviously Karl [Urban] agreed that, you know, with the sentiment, and we were able to explain our case. And we got out of the court scene.”
