When Grant Gustin and Candice Patton found their confidence in their The Flash characters on the CW
The Flash co-stars Grant Gustin and Candice Patton reveal how they found their characters.

The Arrowverse show The Flash remains one of the most popular DC shows even two years after its series finale in 2023.
The cast got to take the members of Team Flash on long journeys of character development over the course of the show's nine seasons. The cast members weigh in at Fan Expo Chicago when they felt they fully embodied the roles.
Candice Patton knew when she got Iris West-Allen down.
"For me, it happened pretty early on. It had everything to do with the bond and the chemistry we were able to create with each other together very early on," she says. "With Grant [Gustin] and Jessie Martin as my dad, it came so naturally to me very quickly. I don't know what that is. Sometimes it's just chemistry. It was such a great environment for us easily fall into."
Grant Gustin also felt he got down Barry Allen and the Flash early in the show.
"For me, it was really early. He changed a lot and evolved a lot," he says. "I never felt I was trying to embody him. I felt like I was bringing a lot of myself to him and following the guidelines of our writers and their stories. It was very natural."
Carlos Vales, who played Cisco and Vibe on the show, sought to present what was on the page.
"But then I watched these guys playing and being creative and took my lead from them. That let me have more fun and get out of my head," he says at FAN EXPO Chicago. "The more I did that the more I surrendered to trusting what was already there."
Patton remembers being nervous being nervous while shooting the pilot.
"I was so scared. I thought, 'what am I doing here? How did I end up with this role? Are they sure? I'm going to be fired.' I felt that way the entire time shooting the pilot," she says.
The director took her aside and calmed her nerves.
"David Nutter told me you are here for a reason. We chose you for a purpose. You have to trust in that," Patton adds.
