There were a couple of big questions fans had after The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power debuted on Prime Video in 2022. One of them was essentially: where was Celeborn? We learned that the husband of Galadriel, portrayed by Morfydd Clark, was believed to be dead - a fact that, if true, would've seriously broken J.R.R. Tolkien's canon. Now, we know that Celeborn is not only alive, but he's being played by Stranger Things star Jamie Campbell Bower. But here's the thing - it's been two full seasons since Celeborn was first mentioned on the show, and if he wasn't dead, just where the hell was he?

While we're still going to have to wait until Rings of Power season 3 to get an exact answer to that question, we did get a couple of hints at the Prime Video panel held at this year's San Diego Comic Con. The panel was hosted by Benjamin Walker (AKA RoP's High King Gil-galad) and attended by Bower himself, so the subject of the character's entrance onto the set was obviously going to come up. Walker referred to Celeborn as having been in something like Harry Potter's Azkaban for "thousands of years," and in response, Bower pointed the finger toward the machinations of Sauron (Charlie Vickers), saying that a tool he frequently used was harming his enemies' "loved ones."

I'm sure you can see where this is going - has Celeborn been a prisoner of Sauron the entire time Rings of Power has thus far been focused on? It's not impossible - in fact, the SDCC-premiere trailer that played before the panel appeared to show Celeborn in what looks like Middle-Earth prison garb, as you can see here:

If it is the case that Sauron was behind Celeborn's imprisonment this whole time, the way we look at Rings of Power seasons 1 and 2 significantly changes, particularly in the Galadriel/Sauron relationship. Essentially, it would mean that every time the pair interacted (and let's face it, almost kissed), he did so fully knowing he had her husband locked away.

And you thought the Elrond kiss was uncomfy.
