Eamon Farren had to learn The Witcher lore fast after landing the role of Cahir
Every actor has to do some level of preparation, but if you're about to enter a robust fantasy world as The Witcher's future Cahir was, you might have to go a little deeper.

Watch a single episode of Netflix's The Witcher and you know how much work goes into it. And I'm not just talking about stunt stuff, either - there are silos of lore behind so many of the production team's choices, not to mention behind the motivations of each actor. And according to Eamon Farren, who plays the morally complex Cahir, prepping from all that history had to be done quickly.
That's what the actor said at MCM Comic Con London May 2023, where he was appearing to promote the then-upcoming Witcher season three. Speaking of his journey from complete Witcher newbie to slapdah expert, Farren said his relationship with the fantasy saga began with a vague audition title.
"I think it was like, an unnamed Netflix fantasy project," Farren told the room of assembled fans. "Or something. So I didn't find out what it was until deep into the auditions."
Naturally, Farren's interviewer wanted to know whether the actor was familiar with The Witcher games, or the series of novels written by Andrzej Sapkowski.
"No, not at all," the actor responded, "So once I got the job I had to do a bit of a deep dive and educate myself pretty quickly. But I had no idea about The Witcher world, so it was a quick learn."
In case you don't know, the "Witcher world" consists of eight novels currently, though at the time Farren was preparing, there were only seven (Crossroads of Ravens, the latest entry, came out in 2025). Even still, that's quite a lot of source material to prepare from - we're certainly curious about, but not envious of, the actor's homework list at that time.
