Wonder Man cancellation isn’t a stunt and there’s no movie, promises showrunner

Wonder Man showrunner Andrew Guest had written the first episode of season 2 before the Disney+ show was canceled

Earlier this year, Wonder Man premiered on Disney+ and won over both diehard MCU fans and critics skeptical of the MCU's longevity. Co-created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest (the latter of whom served as the showrunner), Wonder Man was a grounded buddy comedy starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley as two actors of color trying to achieve artistically fruitful careers in Hollywood. Sure, superpowers factor into the story of Wonder Man, but they're not the chief spectacle of the show.

In March of this year, the show was renewed by Marvel Television. But tragically, the show was canceled last week. Now, Andrew Guest has opened up on the show's cancellation, putting a final nail in the coffin, quashing fans' hopes that it was all a marketing stunt.

"I feel how you all feel. And I just want to clear up what I can here. This is not a marketing stunt. There is no movie in the works. And Destin [Daniel Cretton]’s schedule, and no one’s schedule, was an issue. Yahya [Abdul-Mateen II], Destin, Sir Ben [Kingsley], and I all loved making this show. All felt passionately about continuing to do it and were eager to. Contracts were signed, schedules were cleared. The writer’s room was supposed to start this month. The production was supposed to begin early next year," Guest revealed in a TikTok video.

The showrunner continued, "Even though the writer’s room hadn’t started, I had written the first episode of season two. And we had an outline for where the season would go. And everyone felt really good about it. It was gonna be a really incredible season that, hopefully, surpassed season one."

The Wonder Man show felt like a miracle because of its emotional honesty about being an artist in today's media landscape. I suppose we can count ourselves lucky that we even got the show in the first place. But it is a genuine bummer that Guest and Cretton won't be able to continue on with Wonder Man and Trevor Slattery's story.
