Tom King is one of the most prolific Batman writers in recent years. King murdered Alfred, almost married Batman and Catwoman, and put the Dark Knight through a psychological wringer.
And to think, he did all that while misspelling Batman’s most famous accessory.
During a spotlight panel at Megacon 2024, King’s longtime collaborator Mitch Gerads let the crowd in on a little secret. “Do you guys want some insider info on a Tom King script,” Gerads teases. “Every time I get a Tom King Batman script, it says boatmobile instead of batmobile.”
King blamed it on autocorrect, which is pretty relatable. Who among us hasn’t had our lives ruined by autocorret?
“My autocorrect at some point did it, and I spelled it wrong as I kept pressing ‘add to dictionary,’ and I corrected it to be boatmobile. It’s been that way ever since. I recently had to correct it because I was sending to a non-English speaking artist, and I was like ‘Oh shit, they’re actually going to draw a boatmobile,’” King says. (I kind of wish he drew it anyway)
In fairness to King, a boatmobile sounds cool, and unlike the batmobile, it doesn’t have any wheels to lose in any Jingle Bells parodies.
