If there is one thing we can’t get enough of, it's giant space battles. That’s part of the reason why the Space Battleship Yamato series has had such staying power. The anime first debuted back in 1974 and has spawned multiple sequel series and films as well as a series of remakes of the original anime. This week, we got to see the first trailer for the next remake in the series, Be Forever Yamato: Rebel 3199.

The trailer, which serves mostly as a teaser for the visuals of the upcoming film, revealed the staff creating Be Forever Yamato: Rebel 3199. It also mentioned that the story would be told over the course of seven films, the first of which will debut on July 19, 2024.

Space Battleship Yamato is often cited as one of the most influential anime series of all time. Its focus on more mature themes and complex storylines helped bring us shows like Mobile Suit Gundam and Neon Genesis Evangelion. Be Forever Yamato: Rebel 3199 appears to be a remake of the 1980’s Be Forever Yamato and a direct sequel to 2022’s Space Battleship Yamato 2205: The New Voyage Part II: Stasha.

How this new film will compare with the original Be Forever Yamato is unclear – though the original did involve time travel and parallel galaxies, it never approached the year 3199. It seems more likely that the plot will use the concept of the Yamato traveling to an Earth that has been conquered by aliens for 200 years as a starting point before telling their own story.
