The Black Butler manga has had a strange journey toward being adapted into anime. There have been three different anime seasons, an OVA, and a 2017 film already, but most haven’t been a faithful adaptation of Yana Toboso’s best-selling manga. This is why the upcoming Black Butler anime is so exciting to fans as it will adapt fresh material from the manga. Finally, we have a release date for Black Butler season four, which will give us the Public School arc in animated form.
Crunchyroll first announced the highly anticipated fourth season of Black Butler at Anime Expo in 2023, but it wasn’t until much later that we found out when the series would air. The first episode of the Black Butler Public School arc will be released on April 13, 2024, with new episodes to air weekly in Japan and on Crunchyroll’s streaming platform. It marks the first new animated content from Black Butler since the 2017 Book of the Atlantic movie.
It has been a decade since the previous season of the Black Butler anime series was released, so fans are chomping at the bit to see how the show proceeds. Season three was something of a soft reboot of the anime – it adapted the Noah Ark Circus storyline from the manga while effectively retconning many of the anime-exclusive events out of continuity. The Public School arc looks poised to do the same, adapting chapters 67 to 85 of the Black Butler manga for the first time in the anime.
