For nearly a decade, the acting world has been missing one of its biggest stars. Cameron Diaz, one of the most bankable and prolific actors of the late 90s and 00s, suddenly retired from acting in 2014 to spend more time with her young family and to get a break from the relentless travel being a Hollywood star demands. However, that is coming to an end when the Shrek star returns in the upcoming action-comedy, Back in Action, on Netflix.
Diaz was already a huge name in Hollywood when she stepped into the booth to record lines for Princess Fiona in the first Shrek movie. She gained fame in romantic comedies like There’s Something About Mary and My Best Friend’s Wedding before flexing her action muscles for films like Charlie’s Angels and Knight and Day. So it makes sense that she’d combine those two genres for her return to acting after a decade in retirement.
The Seth Gordon-directed film will reunite Diaz with Jamie Foxx, who co-starred with her in her last film before her retirement, 2014’s Annie. Foxx reportedly lured her out of retirement by asking her “Do you want to have some fun?” which is a good indication that the movie will at least be entertaining to watch. Even if it is nothing but cheesy action, watching stars like Foxx and Diaz enjoy themselves on set can be fun all by itself.
Unfortunately, we don’t have a release date for Back in Action. Filming finished earlier this year, with some scenes needing to be filmed using body doubles for Jaime Foxx, who was hospitalized for a medical emergency at the time. We suspect that it will be released at some point early in 2024 but Netflix has been very short on details so far.
Diaz’s return to acting has also had the unintended effect of fueling the rumors that we’re getting another Shrek movie in the future. Apart from spin-off films like Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, how could they possibly have Shrek 5 without Princess Fiona herself? With Diaz at least dipping her toe back into the world of acting and Puss in Boots’ latest movie becoming one of 2022’s biggest surprise hits, we live in quiet hope that a trip back to Far, Far Away might be in all our future.
