Some would say that comic conventions are held all over the world - but one place they're not happening is on the open seas. But that's about to change.

The oranizers of Comic Con Africa have announced plans for a comic convention on a cruise ship. Titled Comic Con Cruise, this four-day event will take place March 15 through 18, 2024. The Comic Con Cruise will start at the port of Durban, South Africa and then cruise across the cape of Africa to finish off at Cape Town, South Africa.

"This cruise intimately celebrates various pop-culture fandoms," reads a statement from the organizers. "Fans will have an opportunity to meet new friends from different fandoms including comics, tabletop Gaming, film, and TV fanatics, cosplay, sci-fi & fantasy book lovers, anime & manga, as well as gaming."

The Comic Con Cruise 2024 is scheduled to be on the MSC Splendida, a large cruise ship able to host 4,363 passengers. Inside the ship is a theatre, a casino, a niht club, fouru pools, a jogin track, and more. If you're like me and like food food, the MSC Splendida offers exclusives dishes created by noted German chef Harald Wohlfhart.

While the idea of a comic con on a cruise ship is rather unique, this wouldn't be the first time. In the '90s and '00s several small companies hosted comic conventions on cruise ships, and in 2017 a larger company, Fan2Sea Entertainment, launched the first of what was planned as an annual comic convention cruise onboard Royal Caribbean's Brilliance of the Seas. Despite 2200 attendees with a $600+ per cabin price tag, a second Fan2Sea event never took place. In 2021, Skybound Entertainment floated the idea of one of their own, but it has yet to be officially announced.

According to its website, tickets for the Comic Con Cruise 2024 start out at 7,337 Rand (about $400 in US dollars).

Whether by land or by sea, here is a comprehensive comic convention schedule.
