Spider-Man is the ultimate underdog: always getting just a whiff of his big goals and dreams, only it for it to be dashed - but he keeps trying, and takes the small wins when he can. Peter Parker is the modern-day Charlie Brown (with life as that football), and he is the central part of Marvel Comics - something that is no different in his current lead series, The Amazing Spider-Man.

Ben 10 co-creator (and longtime comics writer) Joe Kelly is charting this current Amazing Spider-Man run that is one part nostalgia and one part surprise - including a redeemed Norman Osborn. (Yeah, I don't trust him either, but...)  Coming up this week, Kelly will be joined by guest artist Michael Dowling for this week's Amazing Spider-Man #9 as well as #10 later this month, and together they are picking up Spider-Man after a big loss, and how he recovers.

"SPIDER-MAN'S SHOCKING DEFEAT! Battered and broken following his battle with HELLGATE, SPIDER-MAN needs to level up if he's going to survive the next round," reads the official description of Amazing Spider-man #9. "Peter Parker is a different man following Hellgate's revelation. But MARY JANE WATSON has a revelation of her own to share! And the first foes to put Spidey's strength to the test are SHOCKER and his new allies, THE AFTERSHOCKS!"

Upcoming artists on Amazing Spider-Man are Pepe Larraz, John Romita Jr., and Ed McGuinness.

Amazing Spider-Man #9 comes out August 6, which new issues every two-to-three weeks.

The first five issues of this Amazing Spider-Man era are primed to be collected at the end of this year. The collection, titled Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1: Get Back Up, collects the first five issues on December 9 as he deals with being jobless and his senses out of control. (His Spider-Senses, that is...)

How many comics of Spider-Man are there?

The Amazing Spider-Man is the main Spider-Man comic, but its one of several currently going on a monthly basis such as Ultimate Spider-Man. But in this main The Amazing Spider-Man title, August 6's issue #9 counts as the 973rd issue of this series. At this rate, Amazing Spider-Man #1000 should be coming at us around October 2026.

Who is the original Spider-Man in the comics?

The first Spider-Man ever created was - of course - Peter Parker in 1962's Amazing Fantasy #15 by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee. There have been other Spider-Men (and Spider-heroes) since, but Peter Parker retains the mantle as the Spider-Man and the most popular one, by a large margin.

Thanks to the Spider-Verse, Peter Parker isn't the first Spider-Man in the Marvel multiverse - if you can be liberal with the 'Man' part of it. In 2022's Edge of Spider-Verse #1, it was revealed that in an alternate universe there was a Spider-Dinosaur in the Mezozoic Era. His name is Pter Ptarker, and he is - of course - a Pteranodon. Thanks to a meteorite containing alien spiders, he switched bodies with a T-Rex and became.... the Amazing Spider-Rex.

Who is Peter Parker currently dating?

Peter Parker is currently dating a nurse named Shay Marken. Marken works at the villains rehab facilitty known as the Ravencroft Institute, and came to meet Peter Parker through Peter's ex Mary Jane Watson; it turns out she is the niece of a patient of Shay's. While as of yet she has no secret identity or ulterior motive, she has gone through the seeming superhero rite of passage in that already she hasdied and was brought back to life.
