Marvel gets an Ultimate rebirth, Apple gets creepy, and we love Boosters: Popverse Playlist for May 16-22 2026
You're wondering what to do with the next seven days of pop culture free time? We've got an Apple TV show for you to catch up on, a comic book rebirth from Marvel, and a movie that's so stylish, it's a steal

To borrow a phrase, neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night could stop us getting to the weekend, although it might have felt like it along the way, let’s be honest. But as you stand here, looking at the next seven days ahead of you, we ask but one favor: let Popverse Playlist help you plan out your next week’s worth of pop culture confectionary. We have some very specific suggestions, you see.
This week: Catch up on some horror-comedy, get a glimpse at the future of the Marvel Universe, and steal some time with one of the year’s most stylish movies.
If you only watch one show this week, then it really has to be… Widow’s Bay

For once, I’m not drawing your attention to a new release hitting the small screen in the next seven days — although, you know, Tatiana Maslany’s Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed looks very fun — but, instead, a show that’s been running quietly for the last few weeks that more people should be watching and talking about. Widow’s Bay snuck under the radar before its April 29 premiere, which is a true shame; described by Apple TV as blending “genuine horror with character-driven comedy,” it might better be sold as what would happen if you set Parks and Recreation inside a Stephen King book. There are plenty of King-esque gags and references to be found in the show so far, but just as many laughs in the ongoing story of a small-town mayor just trying to turn things around and create the ultimate New England vacation getaway… despite, you know, the monsters in the fog. Catch up on the show so far over this next week; there’s a special 2-episode drop of the show on May 27 that Apple has announced but won’t give any information on, which suggests something big is about to happen.
Widow’s Bay is streaming on Apple TV.
If you check out one movie this week, then it should be… I Love Boosters

Yes, we know that Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu is also in theaters May 22, but chances are, you’ve already made up your mind about whether or not you’re seeing that one by now. Let’s talk about Boots Riley’s new crime-spree caper, which mixes a killer cast — Keke Palmer, Naomi Ackie, LaKeith Stanfield, Will Poulter, Don Cheadle, and Demi Moore? I mean, come on — and the kind of breathless, frenetic filmmaking that made Riley’s past projects Sorry to Bother You and I’m A Virgo must-sees. The plot? A group of shoplifters and street-level stylists take on a fashion house after she rips them off, and chaos ensues. Come for the anti-capitalism, stay for the overload of absolutely everything else.
I Love Boosters is in theaters May 22.
If you can only pick up one comic this week, then make sure it’s… Ultimate Impact: Reborn #1

Okay, so sure: delays have meant that the Ultimate Universe has missed its own end date (Ultimate Endgame #5 is currently delayed from an April release to June 24, with Ultimate Universe: Finale #1, the final book in the franchise, arriving on the same day), but that doesn’t mean the fallout can’t start on time. Somehow. Tying in with events in the upcoming Avengers: Armageddon and setting up the future of the mainstream Marvel Universe, Ultimate Impact: Reborn — originally announced as Reborn: Ultimate Impact, but these things change — is what happens when unused Origin Boxes from the Ultimate Universe create new heroes and villains in the regular MU, destabilizing the status quo and building… well, that remains to be seen, doesn’t it? The future starts right here with this issue; maybe you should check it out.
Ultimate Impact: Reborn #1 will be available in comic book stores and digitally May 20.
