Buffy the Vampire Slayer began with a reboot, but that's not what the upcoming comic book series focusing on her and her sometimes-beau Angel will be about. Series writer Kelly Thompson, reacting to the overwhelming response to news of the twin series debuting later this year, wrote about the comic over on her Substack - and gave us all the reassurance and hope we needed.
"Buffy Summers is, in my opinion, one of the greatest fictional heroines of all time. I’m not entirely sure I become a writer without Buffy," Thompson writes. "I am definitely not sure Tessa Battle (Storykiller) or Bonnie Braverman and Lola Lafever (The Girl Who Would Be King) exist without her. And I hope I can do her and her world justice for all the fans."

Thompson says she's been working on the series since 2024, and infers that the series bible for this is immense.
"I am very protective of the pitch, and the reading experience of that first issue," Thompson writes. "Fans are going to have a lot of very specific questions and most of them I’m just not going to be able to answer to anyone’s satisfaction. But for now I’ll say this… It is neither a rebooted 'origin story,' nor a reboot with the characters older (like the new TV show reboot appears to be)."
By process of elimination, Thompson seems to be saying this will be set in continuity with the original Buffyverse TV series and those spinoffs. It's unclear if it'll follow the ensuing continuity into the then-official Buffy comics Dark Horse produced, but with Thompson being a veteran of big universes like Marvel and DC, I'm excited to see how she threads this one while telling engrossing stories.
"You don’t need to have ever read any of the other previous Buffy comics to understand this book," says the writer. "And we’ve made it as new reader friendly as possible in case you aren’t already a fan of the show (but it’s pretty obvious that any pre-existing show fans will get the most bang for their buck)."
Thompson says that the first arc of both books will be "pretty integrated," but afterwards they "will become more of their own things."
Dynamite has chosen not to name the artist(s) drawing the Buffy and Angel comic book series just yet, but does say that David Nakayama will be drawing some covers for the two titles.
Those details, as well as a planned release date for these books, will be coming later this year, according to Dynamite.
